MANILA, Philippines – Residents tried to save a pygmy sperm whale in waters off Barangay Dalumpinas Oeste, San Fernando, La Union after it was attacked by a shark.
Lemuel Aragones, associate professor of the UP Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology, said the whale had a bite mark on the left side and several bruises.
He also noted that the whale seemed to have difficulty breathing.
The whale will not be brought back to the waters of South China Sea because it is too weak and stressed. A consultant of the Manila Ocean Park said the whale will be kept under observation for 5 days.
